Five Key Dates to Remember For Your 2023 Tax Season

February 20 – the starting day of the 2023 tax season

The Canada Revenue Agency’s NETFILE, EFILE, ReFILE and T1135 web services stop accepting transmissions of initial and amended (T1) personal income tax and benefit returns at 11:59 P.M. on Friday, January 27, 2023, (Eastern Time) in order to convert the CRA systems for the next filing season.

These services will re-open on Monday, February 20, 2023, at 8:30 A.M. (Eastern Time).

February 28

If you are running a business, and paying salary, dividends or sub-contractors, the deadline to submit T4, T5 or T4A slips is Feb 28.

March 1

March 1 is the deadline for contributing to an RRSP for the 2022 tax year.

If you make RRSP contributions after March 1, 2023, you will have to claim them as deductions on your 2023 tax return.

May 1

May 1 will be your 2023 personal tax filing deadline since April 30 falls on a Sunday.

If you miss the filing deadline, you can still file your taxes, but if you owe tax, you will be charged late-filing penalties, which are five per cent of the balance owed for 2022, plus an extra one per cent fee for each full month after the deadline, up to a maximum of 12 months.

June 15

For self-employed Canadians, the deadline to file their taxes is June 15. However, similar to the May 1 general deadline, if any taxes are owed, the CRA will begin charging interest on unpaid balances beginning May 2.
