I haven’t file taxes more than 2 years, can I still register for CRA my account?

No, to register with the CRA my account, you must have filed taxes for at least one of the past two years. Get your taxes filed first, the register after that.

How do I register for CRA My Account?

  1. Open the link below and click CRA register

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/e-services-individuals/account-individuals.html

  1. Follow the instruction – input your social insurance number, name and the amount on your previous tax return.
  2. Create a CRA user ID and password
  3. Create your security questions and answers.
  4. Enroll in mandatory multi-factor authentication by selecting your preferred method (telephone or passcode grid).

After you complete step one of the registration process, you will have access to limited tax information on My Account. After you enter your CRA security code, you will have access to the full suite of services available in My Account.

  1. Normally, you will get the CRA security code by mail.
  2. After you receive the CRA security code, return to the sign in page, select “CRA sign in,” and enter your CRA user ID and password. When prompted, enter your CRA security code.
  3. You can also sign in to the CRA with a Sign-In Partner. This option lets you sign in with the same sign-in information that you may already have, such as for online banking.

Will the CRA e-Transfer my refund?

No, the CRA will only send you payments by direct deposit or by cheque in the mail. If you receive an e-Transfer claiming to be from the CRA, it’s a scam.

How do I identify scams?

The CRA will never…

  • ask for information about your passport, health card, or driver’s license.
  • demand immediate payment by Interac e-transfer, Bitcoin, prepaid credit cards or gift cards.
  • use aggressive language or threaten to arrest or deport you.
  • send you an email with a link to your refund.
  • leave voicemails that are threatening or give personal or financial information.
  • give or ask for personal or financial information by email and ask you to click on a link.
  • email you a link asking you to fill in an online form with personal or financial details.
  • set up a meeting in a public place to take a payment.

The CRA never uses text messages or instant messaging such as Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp to communicate with taxpayers.
